Facebook signs licensing deal with century-old Indian music label

BENGALURU, June 3 (Reuters) – Facebook Inc has signed a global licensing deal with one of India’s largest music labels, allowing users Things To Do In Kolkata choose from a large catalogue of Bollywood music for their Facebook and Instagram posts, the music company said on Wednesday.

Shares of Saregama India Ltd shot up 20% on the deal.

The music company, which did not disclose the financial details of the deal, said Facebook and Instagram users can now add music from Saregama’s catalogue of more than 100,000 songs spanning 25 languages to their posts and “stories”.

The Kolkata-based company, which sold vinyls and cassettes under household name HMV for decades, is India’s oldest music label and released the country’s first ever studio-recorded song in 1902.

Saregama’s deal with Facebook follows its licensing deal with Swedish music streaming service Spotify, announced earlier this month.

Shares in Saregama surged to 334.65 rupees in Mumbai before hitting a so-called “upper limit” in morning trading.

Government to redraw strategy on Maoists after Chhattisgarh attack

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and chief ministers of ten Maoist violence-hit states will brainstorm on Monday over ways to tackle the menace – a fortnight after 25 CRPF men were massacred in Sukma, Chhattisgarh.

The Home Ministry will discuss a multi-pronged approach centering on security and development with the chief ministers during the meeting focusing on devising ‘new strategies’ to take on the Naxals.

‘The conclave would discuss ways to revamp intelligence gathering mechanism, take a close look at ongoing operations against Naxalites, identify problem areas and devise ways to minimise casualties among the security forces,’ a Home Ministry official said.

Officials said that revamping security may involve better training and strategic joint operations, although sources said a ‘surgical strike’ in the heart of naxal belt will still not be a part of the new strategy.

More mobile phone towers with BSNL setting up base in the red corridor, faster pace of road work, filling in gaps of interstate borders and Trijunctions are ideas likely to be mooted.

Joint coordinated operations with the Indian Air Force, the Border Security Force, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police force and various state police forces to carry out a special anti-Naxal offensive to avenge the death of 25 CRPF soldiers in Burkapal on April 24 will also be discussed, said sources.

The recent assault on a CRPF road opening party was the deadliest since the April 2010 attack in Dantewada, also in Chhattisgarh, in which 76 personnel were killed.

Ahead of the crucial meeting, the strategic command headquarters of CRPF’s anti-Naxal operations was shifted from Kolkata to Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur on Sunday.

The order copy dated May 4 accessed by Mail Today reads: ‘As approved by the competent Authority, the SDG/ADG Central Zone Kolkata is hereby shifted to Raipur with necessary functional staff with immediate effect.’

The decision to move the command headquarters was taken after two bloody encounters with the Maoists in Bheji and Burkapal in the heart of Bastar region in last two months, in which 37 soldiers died.

Chief ministers of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Maharashtra, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and andhra pradesh districts Pradesh have been invited to the meeting, which would be chaired by Singh.

District magistrates and superintendents of police in the 35 worst-hit districts, besides heads of paramilitary forces and intelligence agencies will also be present in the meeting. The strategy will also be state and region specific.

Indian state uses draconian law to detain those accused of killing…

By Saurabh Sharma

LUCKNOW, India, Sept 11 (Reuters) – More than half the arrests this year under a tough national security law in India’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh have involved suspects in cases of cow slaughter, data showed.

The northern state has used the National Security Act (NSA), which allows for those deemed a threat to national security to be detained without charge for up to a year, almost 140 times in the first eight months of the year.

“The NSA has been invoked in 139 cases across Uttar Pradesh, of which 76 have been against the slaughter of cows,” Awanish Awasthi, a top state official, said in a statement.

The figure, for the year to August 18, was first reported by the Indian Express newspaper on Friday.

The cow is considered sacred by India’s Hindu-majority population, and most south states of india, including Uttar Pradesh, have laws against slaughter of the animals.

Vigilante attacks on those accused of killing the animal for meat, often people belonging to the tiny Muslim minority, are common.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has repeatedly urged use of the NSA to combat law and order issues in the state of more than 200 million people.

The Hindu monk is a high-profile figure in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party.

The NSA, which Indian rights activists have described as draconian, is also frequently used in the contested region of Kashmir to detain people suspected of separatist activity.

“In many cases the charges of NSA are dropped because the authorities fail to prove it in court,” said Irfan Ghazi, a lawyer based in the state’s city of Aligarh, who has defended clients held under the act.
